  41. I'd like to use the AES functions appl_tplay() and appl_trecord(). Unfortunatel
  42. y, I still have old ROMs of 1985, and it seems that these functions do not work
  43.  because of them. Does anybody know what are the bugs in the old ROMs ? Is it (
  44. reasonably) possible to implement them by soft, where could I get the listings
  45. (in C, or ev. Asm ) ?

  72. The recent discussions on gcc, g++ and sozoban have been very interested.  I
  73. have been wanting to learn C for the last year or so but didn't have the $$ for
  74. Laser or MWC.  Of course none of the ST mags would mention the pd/sware
  75. stuff...  Anyway, sozoban seems like something I could use.

  77. Uh-oh, problem.  Panarthea seems busted from our site.  Short requests, index,
  78. etc. are ok but not long ones, such as (wouldn't you know it) sozobon partxx.

  129. I bought WERCS late in 1988 and haven't updated it since. Recently
  130. I tried using it to create a resource file (.RSC) with about 10
  131. different dialogue boxes with assorted text strings and buttons in them.
  132. But, at random points in time, WERCS would corrupt the WERCS HRD file
  133. containing the variable names given to each object. Thus, I have not been
  134. able to finish my RSC file.

  136. Could someone from Hisoft (who is I believe the original UK publisher
  137. of WERCS) tell me what is the latest version number and release date
  138. of WERCS? and tell me if Michtron, the USA distributor of WERCS, has
  139. it?? If Michtron doesn't have the latest version of WERCS, could you tell
  140. me how I, who lives in Arizona USA, can get the update. Heck, WERCS is
  141. worth buying all over again if I could just get a working version!!

  160. Last week people were talking about selling Megas to Universities as UNIX
  161. workstations. Is there a version of UNIX for the ST that works with
  162. X Windows? If so will it make use of the Viking 19" monitor?

  165. to use my ST. All information on any version of UNIX for the ST will
  166. be appreciated. (With/with out X Windows, if it even exists for the ST)

  180. For three years I've been using Megamax C and then Laser C.  I've
  181. accumulated the bugs described below, several of which cost me many hours
  182. to track down.  I sent a letter (U.S. Mail) last September 24 saying
  183. what I've said here, but haven't heard anything back from Megamax.  My

  186. Does anyone know if or when Megamax intends to fix these or any other bugs?

  188. If I switch to MWC (or some other C) can I expect similar headaches?

  193. This problem has been there since one of the old Megamax C releases.  It
  194. prohibits pointer arithmetic on pointers to arrays longer than 32K bytes.

  196. 2.  Compiler crash on static initialization
  197. In LaserC v1.0, the compiler didn't crash, but it allocated too few bytes
  198. of storage (one).

  239. the minix newsgroup has split off from info-a16 quite a while ago with
  240. the consequence that most of the st users on the net lack information on
  241. the present state of that os. The nearly permanent discussion on
  242. multitasking on the st shows that there is wide spread interest in a
  243. cheap and working multitasking os (no replies like "why I don't need
  244. multitasking", please! no one is forced to use something different from
  245. tos).  From that background i would like to ask if some of the Minix
  246. users might sum up their experience with the os...
  247.  
  248. a few additional questions:

  250. - is virtual memory provided?
  251.  
  252. - how fast is the file system? Has anyone made comparisons with tos1.4?
  253.   what time does, for example, gcc 1.34 need to compile and link a "
  254.   hello world" program without optimisation? Under tos1.4 and a SH205
  255.   this time is 9 s, mostly disk io. (Fastload flag set, cache111
  256.   installed). Of course, the compilation must be the only user process
  257.   in minix.

  259. - how efficient is the task switching? (MX2/TOS1.2 needs
  260.   5-10% of the cpu time).

  262. - how does minix compare in this respect to cumana os/9, the mt-c-shell?

  264. - how many user processes can be run efficiently?

  298. of two boxes but the monitor cable (SM124) is too short. Any source or

  301. As far as I know, the original cable uses a 75 Ohm coaxial connection
  302. for the video signal and 5 shielded leads for the rest. Is that true?

  350. ... tonight I had the time to open my drive again. I used a fan made by
  351. MICRONEL AG, Tagelswangen/Z"urich, article no. F52AM Q12DN CK (12 V DC).
  352. The fan is nearly compatible to the original fan. It is slightly larger
  353. than that and thinner. But it still fits into the original box. I bought
  354. it from a computer shop in Berlin (by mail order). The people have
  355. advertised in the ST Magazin, I don't know how often since I read that
  356. magazine only occasionally. The original fan has a stronger flow of air
  357. but that proved not to be a problem over operation times of several
  358. hours in a warm room.

  414. Software houses are not bothering to bring out new versions of their ST
  415. packages. (eg. Timeworks, Autoroute)
  416. Their distributors don't tell anyone this. They get you to register your
  417. product so that you will be informed of updates but there will never be any.
  418. They just send you more flyers for new products.

  420. Dave Small thinks Hi-Soft are a good company. We registered our Spectre 128 and
  421. have yet to hear any word on software updates. It took two letters to get
  422. information on upgrading to Spectre GCR and even then they had engineered
  423. the cost to make it better to just buy the GCR. (The first letter yielded a
  424. flyer!)

  426. Those companies still producing ST software seem to be going off in the
  427. wrong direction. (Calamus will NEVER have a Postscript driver I was told by a
  428. Signa rep. Thus no-one here is remotely interested in it.)
